Yoga – For Hindu Gods Or Exercise?
🧘 On this International Yoga Day 2026 – let’s remember that yoga is to unite with God and the yoga poses are meant for glorifying different Hindu Gods.
– Surya Namaskar for Surya the Sun God.
– Natarajasana for Lord Nataraja.
– Matsyendrasana for Matsya, Vishnu’s fish avatar.
Lord Shiva is called AdiYogi – the first yogi. The originator of the yoga system.
The word yoga means to “yoke” or “connect”. It’s understood that the connection is with God.
It’s like when Christians make the sign of the cross. The movement involves the body and works out your upper arms but its primary purpose is religious rather than physical. In the same way, yoga developed as a spiritual practice, even though it can also provide physical benefits.
Yoga is, first and foremost, a spiritual practice rooted in Hindu theology. The physical benefits are real, but they’re a side effect, not the point.
