In 2022, Abdul Basir sent his 19 year old son, Nazrul Islam to work in Saudi Arabia to support family.
Sweety Akhtar, a Bangladeshi, was abandoned by her 2nd husband who cut off contact with her. She decided to go to Arabia to work to support young daughter. She’s still technically married.
Nazrul Islam gets a job as a cleaner at the Mecca mosque. 6 months after arriving in Arabia, he’s arrested in 2023 for cyber crimes. Sweety Akhtar is arrested the day after Nazrul for adultery. They both worked for the same company.
They were both executed on Oct 14th 2026 for an immoral act inside a mosque. What that act was has not been disclosed yet.
Bangladesh was not told that 2 of their citizens were facing the death penalty. Bangladesh received a prisoner list with their names on it & what crimes they were accused of – but no mention of sentence. Cyber crimes, what Nazrul was charged with, carries 5-15 years, not death.
Saudi Arabia has not disclosed in detail:
– the actual act they were killed for nor
– how they were executed (beheading or hanging) nor
– where their bodies are.
Beheading is used for most executions. Saudi Arabia does not normally return the bodies to the families – even of foreigners. They’re buried in an undisclosed location. Arabia hasn’t said if that will be the case here. Nazrul’s father wants his body back.
Bengalis in Bangladesh are outraged but the Bangladesh govt is noticeably silent. Bangladesh receives alot of remittance money from Bangladeshis working in Arabia who send that money back to Bangladesh. So Bangladesh is financially dependant on Saudi Arabia.
