Tamil Nadu. In a regional re-telling of Mahabharat, Aravan was the son of Arjuna & Naga princess, Ulupi. Aravan sacrificed himself as an offering to Kali for her blessings so Pandavas would win war. He requested the night before that he wanted to be married and have relations before being beheaded the next morning. Since no woman would marry him and become a widow the next day – Krishna changed into Mohini and married Aravan that night. After Aravan was beheaded the next morning – Krishna stayed in the Mohini form and mourned him. Every year, the Koovagam Festival celebrates Aravan and the transgender community.
