The Rudranath Temple is a part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage route. The Panch Kedar pilgrimage are 5 temples built in the spot where Lord Shiva’s incarnation as a bull dove into the Earth. Here’s the backstory. It’s not in the original Mahabharat but a regional retelling:

After the Mahabharat war, the Pandavas sought out Lord Shiva for forgiveness of their sins. Shiva was unwillingly to forgive them just then. He turned into a bull and dove into the Earth rather than meet them. He left parts of his body in 5 different places. Temples were built on the spots of those places.
