🔷 KARTHIGAI DEEPAM CHAOS Barricades torn down, stones thrown as Karthigai Deepam row sparks Madurai unrest
Madurai, Tamil Nadu’s Thiruparankundram hill has both a Murugan temple and a Sufi dargah on it. For the past 100 years, for Karthigai Deepam, a fire lamp has been lit at the Uchi Pillaiyar shrine on the hill. It’s on a lower part of the hill & away from the dargah where Muslims are.
The Madurai court ruled that this year, that the fire lamp must be lit at the Deepathoon pillar. It’s higher up on the hill and closer to the dargah. The court said prior to 100 years, the fire lamp was traditionally lit there. The HR&CE (org in charge of festivals) & Muslims objected over inciting religious tensions.
The govt ignored the court’s instructions & posted cops to block the higher Deepathoon pillar near the dargah. Angry men broke through the barricade & attempted to march up the hill. Cops charged at the crowd, stones were pelted, 6 cops injured.
NOTE – This is not the famous Arunachala Hill that’s lit up for Karthigai Deepam every year. That’s in Tiruvannamalai, TN. This hill with the dargah on it is in Madurai.
