Here’s what we know so far about this story. In 2022 The father, Abdul Basir, sent his 19 year old son, Nazrul Islam to Saudi Arabia to find work to support the family back home. Nazrul found work as a cleaner at Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. He was unmarried. Nazrul’s father heard that the girl, Sweety Akhtar worked at the same place.
Within 6 months of Nazrul Islam’s arrival in Saudi Arabia, he was arrested on the charge of an immoral act in a mosque. The Bangladeshi mission was never informed which is a violation of the Vienna Convention which Saudi Arabia signed. It says that says the host country must inform the consulate if foreigner arrested.
Nazrul Islam & Sweety Akhtar were imprisoned & on trial for 3 years. They were both executed on October 14th 2026. Bangladesh was never told of execution before hand.
When someone from Saudi Arabia called the family and told them Nazrul Islam was executed – his aunt upon hearing the news, died of a heart attack that same night.
Nazrul Islam’s father believes there was a conspiracy against his son. He said Nazrul had told him he was in a dispute with a Pakistani national who also worked at the same place. Read that article here
Bangladeshi State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam said death sentence was a major lesson for Bangladesh and that those living abroad need to abide by laws of host country. Shama Obaed said that a message from the labor wing of the Bangladeshi mission in Saudi Arabia said execution was for “adultry”. Nazrul Islam was not married.
If I had to guess, I’d say either the girl was married (we don’t know) or perhaps they met at work & carried on an affair? Being young people in their 20’s that’s possible. Exactly what constitutes an “immoral act” hasn’t been disclosed. We don’t know whether it was just the two of them being together in the same room while unmarried, kissing or intercourse.
