Background – The Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai, TN houses a Murugan temple. The hill is one of the 6 abodes of Murugan. For Kaumaras, this hill would be like Mecca for the Muslims – except Kaumaras have to share their holy spot with a dargah. Also on the hill is a Sufi Muslim dargah. The dargah is higher up on the hill.

For the Shaivite festival, Karthigai Deepam, the TN court instructed the temple to light a large lamp at the top of the hill closer to the dargah. Normally that light it at a pillar in the middle of the hill AWAY from the dargah. The temple refused to light the lamp atop the hill to mainstream peace. Protesters were trying to pack their way through to the top. The matter currently in court. Karthigai Deepam has already passed.

Previously there were tensions between the Murugan devotees and the Muslims because the Muslims were doing animal sacrifice on the hill.
